The federal criminal case against the Southern Poverty Law Center in the Middle District of Alabama centers on an April 2026 indictment, later expanded, charging the organization with wire fraud, false statements to banks, and conspiracy to commit money laundering tied to undisclosed payments to informants associated with extremist groups. The SPLC entered a not guilty plea and unsuccessfully moved to dismiss on vindictive prosecution grounds; a federal judge rejected that effort in August 2026, allowing the case to proceed. With a tentative trial date in early October and a December 31, 2026 resolution deadline, traders assign a 95% implied probability to “No,” reflecting the tight timeline for completing a complex fraud trial, obtaining a guilty verdict or qualifying plea, and avoiding dismissal or unresolved proceedings by year-end.
