Incumbent Keith Ellison holds a strong position as the Democratic-Farmer-Labor nominee seeking a third term against Republican Ronald J. Schutz in the November 3 general election. Traders assign Ellison the leading probability, reflecting Minnesota's history of Democratic control of the attorney general's office since 1971 and the structural advantages of incumbency in statewide races. Recent polling shows the contest tightening, with a mid-August KSTP/SurveyUSA survey finding the candidates tied amid debate over enforcement priorities in public program fraud cases and Ellison's legal actions related to federal policy. Both candidates advanced easily through August primaries, leaving the outcome dependent on turnout patterns and voter assessments of the office's performance on consumer protection and criminal matters.
