Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, arrested by U.S. personnel in early January 2026 and now detained in New York, pleaded not guilty to multiple narcoterrorism conspiracy, drug trafficking, and related charges from a 2020 Southern District indictment. On March 26, 2026, federal Judge Alvin Hellerstein rejected defense motions to dismiss the case amid disputes over using Venezuelan funds for legal fees and arguments that U.S. sanctions tainted the prosecution. Trader consensus at 77.5% for "No" reflects the pre-trial phase, Maduro's vigorous defenses claiming procedural unfairness, and the narcoterrorism statute's limited track record—only 31 guilty pleas among 83 charged—suggesting acquittal or partial convictions remain probable despite strong U.S. evidence. Trial proceedings continue without a scheduled date.
