This market will resolve to "Yes" if the World Health Organization explicitly characterizes Hantavirus, Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS), or a Hantavirus-related outbreak as a "pandemic" in an official public communication between market creation and December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No". An explicit characterization includes official WHO statements, reports, press briefings, or publications that clearly describe the outbreak as a "pandemic." A Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) alone will not qualify unless it is also described as a pandemic. The primary resolution source for this market will be official WHO communications. A consensus of credible reporting may also be used.**Trader consensus on no hantavirus pandemic in 2026 reflects the virus’s established biology and the contained nature of recent clusters.** Most hantaviruses, including those endemic in the Americas, transmit primarily from rodent reservoirs via aerosolized urine, droppings, or saliva rather than sustained human-to-human spread. The Andes virus strain—the only one documented to allow limited person-to-person transmission—requires prolonged close contact and produced only 13 confirmed or probable cases with three deaths during the May 2026 MV Hondius cruise-ship outbreak. Official monitoring by the WHO, CDC, and national agencies ended by late June after quarantine and contact tracing broke transmission chains, with no sustained community spread or imported U.S. cases. Epidemiological data show low reproductive numbers (typically near or below 1), and no evidence of mutations enabling efficient airborne or pre-symptomatic spread has emerged. While a novel strain or significant evolutionary change could theoretically alter dynamics, current surveillance and historical patterns indicate such shifts remain improbable before year-end.
