Republicans currently hold a narrow House majority of roughly 218-220 seats ahead of the November 2026 midterms, making their final seat count highly sensitive to small shifts in the national environment. Democrats maintain a consistent 6-7 point lead on the generic congressional ballot, a pattern that historically produces net opposition gains, while elevated Republican retirements and roughly 45 battleground districts amplify volatility. Mid-decade redistricting in Texas and potential countermeasures elsewhere have further scrambled the map without decisively favoring either side. These overlapping factors—incumbency exposure, polling trends, and procedural changes—sustain a broad distribution of trader probabilities across the 190-215 seat range, with outcomes hinging on turnout in swing districts and any late-cycle developments before Election Day.
