Fed rate expectations and persistent inflation currently anchor gold (XAUUSD) sentiment, with markets pricing a roughly 60-70% chance of a September 2026 hike following Chair Kevin Warsh’s hawkish Jackson Hole remarks and July PCE readings near 3.7% headline and 3.3% core. Elevated Treasury yields and a firmer dollar have driven a recent 5-6% correction from $4,700 highs to around $4,300, raising the opportunity cost for the non-yielding metal. Offsetting supports include sustained central bank purchases averaging near 50 tonnes monthly and lingering geopolitical risks in the Middle East that could revive safe-haven flows. Upcoming nonfarm payrolls and any shift in inflation prints will likely dictate near-term swings, while analyst targets cluster between $4,300 and $5,000 by year-end depending on the policy path.
