Recent moderation in U.S. manufacturing activity after July’s 55.6 reading—the strongest since May 2022—has left trader sentiment dispersed across the September 2026 ISM Manufacturing PMI ranges. The August PMI eased to 54.6, below consensus expectations of 55.2, as new orders slowed to 53.7 and backlogs contracted while production held near 58.3 and the prices index remained elevated at 71.1 amid tariffs on steel and aluminum plus Middle East supply-chain pressures. Eight consecutive months above 50 signal sustained expansion supported by AI-related capex, reshoring, and defense spending, yet persistent input-cost volatility and softer demand create swing factors that keep implied probabilities closely matched between the low-50s and mid-50s brackets ahead of the October 1 release.
