Recent polling averages place National and Labour nearly level in the low-to-mid 20s to low 30s for party vote ahead of the 7 November election, with both major parties at multi-decade lows as support fragments toward the Greens, New Zealand First, ACT, and The Opportunities Party. This fragmentation, combined with mixed results across recent surveys showing Labour edging National by narrow margins in some and the reverse in others, keeps the contest for second place highly sensitive to small shifts in voter preference. National’s position in the market reflects its established base and coalition track record, while Labour’s standing hinges on turnout among progressive voters and the final positioning of minor parties that could influence seat allocations under MMP. The next six weeks of campaigning, including advance voting, will determine whether either party pulls ahead.
