Mahmoud Abbas, the 90-year-old Palestinian Authority president and Fatah leader, remains in office after his unanimous re-election at the movement’s May 2026 congress and the election of his son to a top party body. In July he issued a decree scheduling the first legislative elections in more than two decades for November 28, 2026, across the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem, though analysts note the 2021 precedent when a similar vote was canceled amid threats to his position. Trader consensus reflects limited near-term change because Abbas continues to govern by decree with no formal succession mechanism activated, while international calls for Palestinian Authority reform have not produced concrete pressure on his tenure. Any shift would likely require either health-related developments, a completed election cycle that alters Fatah power structures, or unforeseen internal party moves.
