Statistics Canada's March 18 release confirmed Canada's first annual population decline on record in 2025, down 102,000 people to 41.47 million by January 1, 2026, driven by sharp reductions in non-permanent residents amid federal Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) caps. Early 2026 quarterly data shows continued shrinkage, particularly in Ontario and Quebec, but Parliamentary Budget Officer projections from late February indicate flat population for the full year due to stabilizing temporary outflows offset by 380,000 permanent resident targets. Traders price "No" at 57% as the 2026 drop, if realized, is unlikely to exceed 2025's magnitude, with long-term Statistics Canada forecasts anticipating renewed growth. Upcoming Q1 2026 estimates in June could shift sentiment.
