Trader sentiment on South Africa’s 2026 annual CPI inflation remains tightly contested, with 4.1-4.4% (25.5%) edging out >5.0% (24.8%) as markets price in a tug-of-war between disinflationary forces and upside risks. February 2026 headline CPI eased to 3.0% year-on-year—the lowest since June 2025—supported by softer food prices and a stable rand, aligning with the South African Reserve Bank’s (SARB) 3% target midpoint. However, SARB’s March Monetary Policy Committee raised its 2026 forecast peak to 4%, citing accelerating fuel inflation exceeding 18% in Q2 amid global energy tensions and administered price hikes. Key differentiators include March CPI due April 22 and May fuel adjustments, potentially tipping odds higher if oil pass-through exceeds estimates; sub-4% bins reflect hopes for SARB rate cuts from 6.75% repo amid sluggish growth.
