South Korea's EWY ETF, which tracks the MSCI Korea Index with heavy exposure to semiconductors via Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, traded in a volatile range near 175-180 during the week of September 14, 2026, closing around 176 on September 14 before easing to 175.54 on September 16. Primary drivers included the Federal Reserve's first rate hike since 2023—lifting the target range to 3.75-4.00%—which pressured rate-sensitive tech holdings, alongside warnings from AI executives on development pace that triggered sharp selling in memory chip names. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and elevated oil prices added downside pressure, with foreign investors net sellers of Korean equities. KOSPI fell over 3% early in the week before stabilizing, reflecting shifting monetary policy expectations and sector rotation toward industrials. Traders are monitoring upcoming inflation data and corporate earnings for further signals on rate paths and AI demand.
