Democratic advantages on the generic congressional ballot, recently averaging around D+6, remain the dominant driver of trader positioning on Republican House seats following the 2026 midterms. With Republicans currently holding a narrow 218-212 majority plus vacancies, historical midterm patterns and polling trends point to potential Democratic gains in competitive districts. Key factors include 59 open seats (disproportionately Republican), 18 toss-up races per recent Cook Political Report ratings, and voter sentiment reflected in consistent Democratic leads across multiple pollsters. The spread across seat bins from below 190 through 214 underscores the tight contest, where outcomes hinge on turnout in battlegrounds, special election signals, and any shifts in national conditions before November.
