An arrest warrant followed, with Acting Attorney General statements indicating expectations that Castro would face US courts either voluntarily or otherwise. As of early August 2026, however, Castro remains in Cuba, where he has made limited public appearances, including after his 95th birthday, and Cuban authorities have rejected the charges as illegitimate. No extradition has occurred, and reports confirm no departure from the island. Trader assessments of custody by any near-term deadline therefore hinge on the feasibility of US enforcement actions against a high-profile figure in a sovereign state amid ongoing bilateral tensions, with historical precedents for such operations remaining rare and diplomatically complex.
