Recent strength in U.S. manufacturing, highlighted by the July ISM PMI surging to 55.6—the highest since May 2022—underpins tight market-implied odds clustered around 54.0–55.9 for the August reading. Broad-based gains in new orders (56.7), production (58.5), and employment (52.8, first expansion in 33 months) reflect sustained AI-related investment and front-loading ahead of tariffs, offsetting geopolitical supply strains and elevated input costs (prices index at 71.1). Thin customer inventories and rebuilding backlogs support further momentum, though persistent cost pressures and potential moderation in demand could cap upside. Traders price in continuity from these dynamics ahead of the September 1 release, with closely matched probabilities underscoring uncertainty around any sequential softening.
