Republican prospects for retaining House seats in the 2026 midterms remain tightly contested due to the party's narrow current majority of roughly 218 seats and the historical tendency for the president's party to lose ground in midterm elections. Recent forecasts from Cook Political Report and other analysts show competitive ratings across dozens of districts, with substantial Republican retirements and a national environment favoring Democrats by several points in generic ballot polling. Redistricting has provided some structural offset for Republicans, yet the overall map and voter turnout patterns in swing districts sustain market prices clustered around 200-214 seats. Key upcoming developments include primary outcomes, candidate recruitment, and any shifts in presidential approval that could widen or narrow the projected net loss.
