Recent August 2026 CPI data at 3.1% year-over-year, rebounding from July’s 2.8% amid elevated energy prices, a weaker won, and one-off telecom base effects, has reinforced trader focus on South Korea’s inflation trajectory. Core inflation accelerated to 3.4%, its highest since 2023, signaling persistent underlying pressures beyond volatile components. The Bank of Korea’s back-to-back rate hikes to 3.0% reflect efforts to anchor expectations above the 2% target while supporting export-led growth from semiconductors. With September data expected to moderate but domestic demand and geopolitical oil risks lingering, market-implied odds tilt toward 3.0%+ or 2.7–2.9% annual outcomes, underscoring uncertainty around the pace of disinflation through year-end.
