Incumbent Democrat Josh Gottheimer holds a strong position in New Jersey’s 5th congressional district ahead of the November 2026 general election, supported by the seat’s D+2 Cook Partisan Voter Index and his consistent victories, including a 54.6% win in 2024. The district’s suburban northern New Jersey makeup, spanning Bergen, Passaic, and Sussex counties, has favored Democratic performance in recent cycles, reinforced by Gottheimer’s primary victory and the Republican nominee’s limited profile. Trader consensus reflects this structural and incumbency advantage. Potential shifts could arise from a pronounced national Republican wave, significant late developments affecting turnout in competitive suburbs, or unforeseen campaign dynamics that alter the narrow partisan margin.
