Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth's commanding position as next First Minister of Wales stems from his party's historic victory in the May 7, 2026 Senedd election, securing the most seats and ending 25 years of uninterrupted Labour governance. Newly elected Senedd members formally nominated and voted for ap Iorwerth on May 12, with support from the Green Party and abstentions from others, enabling his swearing-in despite Plaid lacking a majority for a minority government. Labour's Eluned Morgan lost her seat amid the party's worst result. While trader consensus reflects this confirmed outcome, rare challenges could arise from an early no-confidence vote or coalition breakdown if legislative priorities falter.
