This market will resolve to "Yes" if a writ calling for a parliamentary by-election in a UK parliamentary constituency is issued by the UK Clerk of the Crown in Chancery by the specified date, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No". The issuance of a writ must be confirmed within the specified timeframe to qualify. Only a writ issued after market creation will count. The writ for the Holborn and St Pancras by-election, issued prior to market creation, will not qualify. The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the government of the United Kingdom, including the UK Parliament and the relevant local government conducting the election; however a consensus of credible reporting will also be used.**Recent UK parliamentary by-elections have been driven by targeted resignations.** Nigel Farage resigned his Clacton seat in July 2026 amid financial scrutiny, prompting Reform UK’s Chief Whip to move the writ for the 13 August contest, which Farage then won. Keir Starmer’s 1 September 2026 resignation from Holborn and St Pancras—following his departure as Prime Minister and Labour leader—has led Labour’s Chief Whip to initiate the writ for the 8 October by-election. Under standard procedure, the Chief Whip of the party that previously held the vacant seat moves the motion in the Commons to issue the writ, typically within weeks of a vacancy. With Andy Burnham now leading Labour, attention has turned to whether further vacancies will arise from leadership transitions, backbench decisions, or other parties. The next writ will depend on the timing and party affiliation of any subsequent resignation.
