Recent moderation in South Korea’s headline CPI to 2.8% year-over-year in July 2026, down from 3.2% in June and below consensus, has anchored trader sentiment for the full-year average near 2.7–2.9%. The Bank of Korea’s 25-basis-point base-rate hike to 2.75% in mid-July reinforced expectations that policy tightening will help contain pressures, even as earlier upward revisions to 2026 forecasts reflected robust semiconductor exports and lingering energy effects. Core inflation at 2.5% signals contained underlying trends, yet markets price a close contest with the 3.0%+ outcome because August data and any further BoK moves could shift the trajectory. The next CPI release and monetary-policy decision in late August remain key near-term catalysts.
