OpenAI’s confidential S-1 filing in June 2026 and its $852 billion March private valuation set the baseline for IPO pricing expectations, with CEO Sam Altman treating a $1 trillion threshold as non-negotiable. This stance, reinforced by CFO Sarah Friar’s August signal of a likely 2027 debut absent stronger inflection, has shifted focus from a September 2026 window that has already passed. Traders are weighing rapid revenue growth—now near a $24 billion annualized run rate—against projected 2026 losses near $14 billion and heavy infrastructure commitments. Comparable AI listings, including Anthropic’s $965 billion mark and SpaceX’s volatile debut, underscore how market sentiment and post-IPO performance could determine whether the company clears or falls short of key market-cap hurdles at closing.
