Persistent marine layer and onshore southwesterly flow are capping San Francisco temperatures near or slightly below the 69–70°F September 2 climatological average, with current forecasts centering on highs of 66–68°F under mostly cloudy skies. Model consensus shows modest warming potential only if the layer thins enough for afternoon sun, creating the tight 70–71°F versus 72–73°F market split; stronger onshore winds or deeper stratus would instead favor the lower-probability 68–69°F outcome. Historical analogs indicate that early-September marine intrusions often suppress peaks by 5–10°F below clear-sky potential, while any ridge strengthening could briefly allow low-70s readings before the next trough arrives.
