The iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (EWY) mirrored the KOSPI's explosive rally during the week of May 4, 2026, climbing from around $165 to highs near $173 by May 5 amid a semiconductor-driven surge fueled by AI demand for memory chips from Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Year-to-date gains exceed 76%, backed by $6.3 billion in inflows and record $5.5 billion call option open interest, though a $409 million outflow hit on May 7 as shares traded 66% above the 200-day moving average. Accelerating April CPI at +2.6% year-over-year has Bank of Korea policymakers signaling potential hikes from the 2.50% policy rate, with May business sentiment index and trade balance releases as key near-term catalysts.
