Recent South Korean CPI data, including the August 2026 year-over-year reading at 3.1% (up from 2.8% in July) and core inflation accelerating to 3.4%, have elevated trader-implied odds for full-year average outcomes at or above 2.7%, with the 3.0%+ bucket leading at 41.9%. The Bank of Korea’s back-to-back rate hikes to 3% and upward revisions to its 2026 headline forecast of 2.7% reflect persistent cost pressures from elevated oil prices, a weaker won, and building demand-side inflation amid robust semiconductor-driven growth. Consensus projections from institutions such as KDI and the IMF cluster near 2.5–2.7%, yet recent monthly prints and core trends support market pricing around the 2.7–3.0%+ range. Key near-term catalysts include upcoming CPI releases and further BOK policy signals, with geopolitical and exchange-rate volatility adding uncertainty to the annual average resolution.
