The most recent magnitude 7.0 or greater earthquake—a M7.4 event 126 km west-northwest of Ternate, Indonesia—occurred on April 1, 2026, according to USGS data, following a cluster including M7.5 Tonga on March 24 and M7.3 Vanuatu on March 30. With 15 days passed without another, traders weigh this against USGS historical averages of 12–15 M7+ quakes worldwide annually, driven by ongoing plate tectonic interactions along faults like the Pacific Ring of Fire. Earthquake timing remains inherently unpredictable, following a roughly Poisson process with no reliable short-term forecasts from current seismic monitoring, which shows no elevated global swarms or foreshocks. Watch USGS real-time catalog updates for any shifts in activity from high-hazard regions.

The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/browse/significant.php#sigdef).
If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until the end of the month following resolution time or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used.
After a qualifying earthquake is registered, this market will remain open for 24 hours to account for any revisions to its recorded magnitude. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data.
