The Trump administration notified Congress in February 2026 of plans for a phased reopening of the U.S. Embassy in Damascus, closed since 2012 amid the Syrian civil war, following the December 2024 ouster of Bashar al-Assad. Special Envoy Tom Barrack raised the U.S. flag at the ambassador’s residence in May 2025 during early engagement with the new government under President Ahmed al-Sharaa. Key recent catalysts include the August 2026 removal of Syria from the U.S. State Sponsors of Terrorism list and the revocation of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s terrorist designation, alongside European countries such as Germany and Denmark reopening resident embassies in Damascus. These steps reflect broader U.S.-Syria diplomatic normalization, security cooperation, and sanctions relief, with trader assessments shaped by timelines for full operations, congressional reviews, and any conditions tied to stability or bilateral commitments.

This market will resolve to "Yes" if the U.S. government announces the reopening of its embassy in Damascus or if such a reopening is otherwise confirmed by 11:59 PM ET on the specified date. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No".
An official announcement made within this market’s timeframe will qualify for a "Yes" resolution regardless of whether an actual embassy opening subsequently takes place within the timeframe.
Any opening of a U.S. embassy in Damascus will qualify regardless of its exact location.
Announcements that do not clearly commit to opening an embassy, such as general diplomatic statements, exploratory comments, or partial/conditional steps, will not count.
The resolution source will be official statements from the Governments of the U.S. and Syria; however, a consensus of credible reporting will also be used.
