President Trump publicly endorsed renaming Immigration and Customs Enforcement to National Immigration and Customs Enforcement (NICE) in April 2026 via Truth Social, amplifying a supporter’s suggestion to force media references to “NICE agents.” The administration and Department of Homeland Security subsequently shared related memes, and Trump conducted an online poll on the idea in June. Any official name change requires congressional legislation to amend the agency’s authorizing statute, a step that has not occurred. Internal resistance emerged from ICE personnel and border czar Tom Homan, with White House statements later framing the concept primarily as branding or messaging rather than a priority legislative effort. As of September 2026, the proposal remains stalled amid the administration’s broader immigration enforcement activities.
