Official National Weather Service observations from Los Angeles International Airport recorded a maximum of 99°F on September 9, 2026, with downtown Los Angeles reaching 105°F, confirming the market's near-certain outcome for 96°F or higher. This extreme heat stemmed from a strong upper-level high-pressure system combined with elevated humidity from Hurricane Marie's remnants, which suppressed cooling and produced oppressive conditions under active extreme heat warnings. Such readings align with historical late-summer peaks but exceeded seasonal normals by over 20°F at coastal stations. Resolution depends on verified NWS climatological reports; any revision to station data or measurement protocols remains the only realistic path to altering the outcome.
