Eurozone headline HICP inflation surged to 2.5% year-over-year in March 2026—up sharply from 1.9% in February—primarily driven by soaring energy costs amid Middle East tensions and an oil shock pushing prices toward $145 per barrel in Q2. This rebound prompted the ECB's March staff projections to lift the 2026 average inflation forecast to 2.6% from prior estimates near 1.9%, citing persistent unprocessed food and energy pressures. Polymarket traders reflect this hawkish tilt with a 53.2% implied probability for annual 2026 HICP exceeding 3.1%, outpacing the 28.4% odds for 2.5–2.7% aligned to ECB consensus, amid risks of second-round effects; the April flash estimate due end-month and May ECB meeting loom as key catalysts.
