This market will resolve according to the total number of earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.0 or higher that occur anywhere on Earth between January 1 and December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/browse/significant.php#sigdef). If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until January 7, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used.Year-to-date 2026 seismicity tracked by the USGS remains near the long-term global average of roughly 15–18 magnitude 7.0+ events, with nine recorded through July—including a 7.8 offshore the Philippines in June, paired 7.5 and 7.2 shocks near Venezuela, a 7.3 in Mexico, and earlier activity near Tonga and Japan. This steady pace in subduction-zone settings, without evident acceleration or quiescence, underpins trader consensus favoring the 14–16 bin at 46% implied probability. Natural variability from aftershock sequences and episodic Pacific Ring of Fire clusters can readily shift the final tally by several events, sustaining interest in the adjacent 17–19 range while keeping lower or higher extremes at minimal odds. Updated USGS catalogs through year-end will determine resolution.
