Recent July CPI data showing a 0.1% month-over-month rise, following June’s 0.4% decline, combined with Cleveland Fed nowcasts projecting 0.35% headline and 0.20% core for August, anchors trader expectations around modest gains near 0.3–0.4%. Shelter costs, which contributed two-thirds of July’s increase, food-at-home trends, and volatile energy components—particularly gasoline amid lingering Middle East supply concerns—introduce meaningful dispersion across outcomes. With top probabilities clustered between 21% and 32.5%, markets reflect uncertainty over whether cooling energy prices or persistent services inflation will dominate the August print. The September 11 release and intervening high-frequency indicators such as weekly gasoline data remain the key near-term catalysts shaping these implied odds.
