The IA-02 race is an open seat following incumbent Republican Ashley Hinson’s decision to run for U.S. Senate, pitting Republican nominee and former state representative Joe Mitchell against Democratic nominee and state representative Lindsay James. The district’s Cook Partisan Voting Index of R+4 and recent Republican performance with blue-collar voters along the Mississippi River underpin the market’s modest Republican lean at 56.5 percent. Democrats view the contest as competitive given statewide motivation around the gubernatorial and Senate races, and an early head-to-head poll showed James narrowly ahead. Primary results from June 2, 2026, confirmed the nominees without major subsequent developments, leaving the race sensitive to campaign spending, turnout patterns, and any late shifts in the broader Iowa political environment ahead of the November general election.

A candidate's party will be determined by their ballot-listed or otherwise identifiable affiliation with that party at the time all of the 2026 House elections are conclusively called by this market's resolution sources. A candidate without a ballot-listed affiliation to either the Democrat or Republican parties will be considered a member of one of these parties based on the party with which they most recently expressed their intent to caucus at the time all of the House elections are conclusively called by this market's resolution sources.
This market will resolve based on the result of the election as indicated by a consensus of credible reporting. If there is ambiguity, this market will resolve based solely on the official results as reported by the United States government, specifically the Federal Election Commission (https://www.fec.gov/).
