The race for New Westminster mayor on October 17 remains closely contested between incumbent Patrick Johnstone of Community First New West and challenger Daniel Fontaine of the New West Progressives, with trader odds reflecting Johnstone’s modest edge as sitting mayor and his party’s council majority. Primary factors include policy contrasts on public safety, housing affordability, taxes, and resident engagement, where Fontaine has highlighted perceived disconnects at city hall while Johnstone emphasizes continuity on climate action and progressive initiatives. Recent developments center on spring and summer 2026 candidate nominations, NWP platform releases targeting street cleanliness and enforcement, and Johnstone’s re-election announcement framing the contest around maintaining momentum. Low historical turnout and the absence of public polls keep uncertainty elevated, though the two-candidate dynamic and local party structures limit room for other contenders to gain traction before election day.
