The redrawn boundaries of California's 48th congressional district under Proposition 50 shifted the seat from Republican-leaning to a narrow Democratic advantage, driving the strong trader consensus favoring the Democratic nominee. With longtime Republican incumbent Darrell Issa retiring, the June 2 primary produced a general-election matchup between Republican Jim Desmond and Democrat Marni von Wilpert. Pre-primary polling and nonpartisan ratings from Cook Political Report and others classified the race as Lean Democratic, reflecting the district's updated voter registration edge and San Diego-area demographics. The top-two primary outcome eliminated other Democratic contenders, consolidating the field ahead of the November general election without altering the underlying partisan tilt.
