The Okinawa gubernatorial election on September 13 features a tight race between incumbent Denny Tamaki, seeking a third term on a platform opposing the Futenma relocation to Henoko, and challenger Genta Koja, the Naha deputy mayor endorsed by conservative forces including the LDP and aligned with acceptance of the base plan. Recent national lower house results in February weakened Tamaki’s All Okinawa coalition across prefectural districts, contributing to wavering support amid shifting voter priorities toward economic issues. Multiple additional candidates, including Shun Kaneshima and Mikio Shimoji, further fragment the field. This dynamic sustains close trader pricing, with separation likely hinging on final campaign turnout, endorsements from centrist groups, and any late developments on base-related negotiations or local economic indicators.
