**The Chiclayo provincial mayoral race remains tightly contested ahead of the October 4, 2026 vote, with trader consensus centering on Edwin Gonzalo Vásquez Sánchez and Elber Requejo Sánchez as the leading contenders.** Vásquez, current mayor of La Victoria district, highlights infrastructure projects, security enhancements, and public works as his platform while seeking the provincial post. Requejo, former mayor of José Leonardo Ortiz, was removed from office by the JNE in May 2026 over a nepotism finding involving a relative's hiring, though he continues campaigning and attributes the decision to local opposition. Mid-2026 polls showed Requejo ahead by double digits in some surveys, yet the market's near-even implied probabilities reflect uncertainty over voter reaction to these records, ongoing local governance issues, and the fragmented field of lower-polling candidates. No major late-August or early-September developments have shifted the balance.
