Recent polling aggregates show Labour and National running neck-and-neck in the low 30s percent, with Labour holding a narrow edge in several July surveys ahead of the November 7 election. This tight race underpins trader pricing that places one of the two major parties first and the other second, with National carrying the higher implied probability of finishing second. Smaller parties remain at minimal odds for second place because New Zealand’s MMP system concentrates first- and second-place finishes between the largest vote-getters. Sustained economic concerns and modest declines in the governing coalition’s support have contributed to Labour’s polling recovery over the past several months, keeping the contest between the two main parties the dominant factor in current market positioning.
