The tight contest between New Zealand’s two largest parties under the mixed-member proportional system, with the November 7 election roughly eight weeks away, underpins current trader positioning. Recent Taxpayers’ Union–Curia and other polling averages show National and Labour clustered near 29–30 percent party vote, producing seat projections that frequently favor a National–ACT–NZ First majority while leaving Labour reliant on Greens and Te Pāti Māori for any path to government. National’s position as incumbent coalition leader has been tested by internal leadership votes and fluctuating support, yet the bloc’s combined polling remains sufficient for re-election scenarios in most models. Minor parties remain marginal in outright “winner” terms given the 5 percent threshold and electorate dynamics. Late-campaign shifts in turnout or coalition negotiations could still alter final seat outcomes.
