Lai secured the DPP nomination after a January primary victory over rivals including Chiu Yi-ying, Hsu Chih-chieh, and Lin Tai-hua. Ko received the KMT nod in December 2025 following his competitive 2022 showing. Multiple 2026 surveys have shown Lai holding a narrow edge across demographics, though support levels stay close enough to sustain uncertainty. Key variables include local economic concerns in the port city, party mobilization, turnout patterns, and any late campaign developments that could shift the balance before election day.
