Hawkish ECB communications and elevated inflation expectations from geopolitical energy shocks underpin the 92.5% market-implied probability against an ECB rate cut in 2026. With the deposit facility rate at 2.25% following the June hike, July data showed headline inflation near 2.9% and core at 2.5%, while Eurosystem projections place 2026 average inflation at 3.0%. Traders price a September increase to 2.50% and further tightening into 2027, with the euro-area neutral rate gauge rising toward 2.8%. This consensus reflects resilient activity and persistent price pressures rather than pre-committed easing. A sharp de-escalation in Middle East tensions that rapidly lowers energy costs could still shift the data-dependent path toward cuts, though such outcomes remain low-probability given current forward pricing.

This market may not resolve to "No" until the ECB has released its rate change decision following its December meeting. If, however, the ECB’s December meeting is cancelled, postponed after December 31, 2026, or the rate change decision for that meeting is otherwise unknown by December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, and no qualifying rate decrease has occurred, this market will resolve immediately to “No”.
The primary resolution source for this market will be the European Central Bank (https://www.ecb.europa.eu/stats/policy_and_exchange_rates/key_ecb_interest_rates/html/index.en.html), however a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
