**Multiple Republican candidates are competing in Louisiana’s open 5th congressional district jungle primary scheduled for November 3, 2026.** Recent redistricting added contenders such as state Sen. Stewart Cathey and state Rep. Gabe Firment to an already crowded field that includes state Rep. Michael Echols, Misti Cordell, Austin Magee, Oscar Dantzler, and Democrat Dan McKay. Earlier polling in the fragmented Republican primary showed no candidate exceeding roughly one-quarter of the vote. With vote-splitting expected among several well-funded Republicans in a solidly Republican district, traders assign only a 7% chance that any single candidate clears the 50% threshold required for an outright win. A December 12 runoff therefore remains the strong consensus outcome absent a major consolidation of support before Election Day.
