The closely contested Massachusetts Question 3, which would replace party primaries with a single all-party primary advancing the top two candidates regardless of affiliation, reflects competing pressures ahead of the November 3 vote. Both the Democratic and Republican state parties, along with multiple unions and progressive groups, oppose the measure over concerns about reduced party roles, higher campaign costs, and impacts on grassroots organizing. Moderate Democrats including Representatives Seth Moulton and Jake Auchincloss have voiced support, citing potential for broader competition. A recent UMass survey showed 51 percent likely yes support against 32 percent no, with 17 percent undecided. The Supreme Judicial Court cleared the initiative for the ballot in June after rejecting legal challenges. Upcoming polling shifts, endorsements, and turnout patterns in the final weeks could alter the narrow trader consensus favoring rejection.
