Tennessee's 9th congressional district underwent significant redistricting in May 2026, shifting from a Memphis-centered majority-minority seat to a configuration that supported Donald Trump by a 60-38 margin in the 2024 presidential election. Longtime Democratic incumbent Steve Cohen retired following the map changes, opening the seat. Republican nominee Brent Taylor, a state senator who secured President Trump's endorsement, won his party's August 6 primary. Democratic nominee Justin Pearson, a state representative, prevailed in his primary. The National Republican Congressional Committee has designated the district a top target for pickup. These factors, including the altered electoral math and open-seat dynamics, underpin trader consensus favoring a Republican outcome in the November 3 general election.
