Analyses from U.S. and Taiwanese defense assessments note steady but uneven PLA progress on amphibious and joint capabilities, with most observers viewing 2027 rather than late 2026 as a more plausible window. The limited time remaining before year-end precludes the visible large-scale mobilization, logistics buildup, and political signaling required for a full-scale assault. Xi Jinping’s May 2026 summit remarks reiterated the importance of the Taiwan issue without indicating imminent action. Trader consensus at 96 percent “No” therefore reflects the absence of acute triggers, high operational risks, and the enduring preference for sustained coercion over kinetic conflict. A rapid miscalculation during patrols or an unforeseen Taiwanese move could still raise tensions, though even those developments would be unlikely to produce an invasion before December 31.
