Nicolás Maduro has remained in U.S. custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since his January 2026 capture by American forces during Operation Absolute Resolve. He faces federal narcoterrorism and drug-trafficking charges tied to alleged cocaine distribution networks, with court proceedings including a not-guilty plea and disputes over defense funding. The near-even split between 60-plus years and no prison time reflects trader focus on trial uncertainties, possible plea negotiations, and broader U.S.-Venezuela diplomatic pressures involving oil policy and the acting government under Delcy Rodríguez. Upcoming hearings and any shifts in administration priorities could alter outcomes before sentencing.
