Erika Jurinová, the incumbent Žilina Region governor since 2017 and Slovakia’s first woman in the role, holds the leading position in the October 24, 2026, election due to her established record on regional infrastructure, social services, and transport integration, reinforced by a broad coalition of center-right and liberal parties including Hnutie Slovensko, Za ľudí, SaS, and Progresívne Slovensko. She formally confirmed her third-term bid in late June 2026. Main challengers include Igor Choma (SMER-SD), a repeat candidate and former Žilina mayor now backed by the ruling party; Martin Kapitulík as an independent; Adam Lučanský (SNS); and Anna Belousovová (Republika). A June-July 2026 SANEP poll showed Jurinová narrowly ahead amid a large undecided share, consistent with trader consensus reflecting her incumbency advantage and unified opposition support while noting the still-competitive field ahead of candidate registration deadlines.
