Christine Fréchette's landslide victory in the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) leadership race on April 12 solidified her position as Quebec's next premier, succeeding François Legault who resigned in January amid low approval ratings and ahead of the October provincial election. As leader of the majority CAQ caucus in the National Assembly, Fréchette was sworn in this week, prompting traders to price her outcome at virtually 100% to reflect the procedural certainty of her ascension without needing a general election. Bernard Drainville, her runner-up and former environment minister, garnered minimal support in the final vote. Realistic challenges would require a no-confidence vote, snap election called by opposition parties like the Parti Québécois or Liberals, or internal CAQ revolt—none of which appear imminent given the party's legislative supermajority.
