China’s 2026 annual CPI inflation has settled near the low end of historical ranges amid persistently weak domestic demand, a sluggish property sector, and subdued consumer spending that limit firms’ ability to pass through costs. Recent monthly prints reflect this environment: the July reading eased to 0.5% year-on-year—the softest in six months—driven by falling food prices (especially pork) and moderating non-food categories after earlier energy-driven spikes tied to Middle East supply disruptions. Producer prices have also cooled from their June peak, while official forecasts from bodies such as the Asian Development Bank point to a full-year rate around 1.2%. Trader pricing in the 0.6–1.0% bracket at 51.5% therefore captures the consensus that subdued retail momentum and easing external price pressures will outweigh seasonal or policy-driven rebounds through year-end.
