Virginia Democrats pursued mid-decade congressional redistricting through a 2026 constitutional amendment and voter referendum, which passed narrowly in April before a proposed Democratic-favored map advanced. The Virginia Supreme Court overturned the amendment in May, citing procedural violations of the state constitution requiring approval across two consecutive legislative sessions separated by a general election. The U.S. Supreme Court declined further review, and Governor Abigail Spanberger confirmed use of the 2021 districts after the May 12 deadline for changes passed. With congressional primaries scheduled for August 4 and the general election on November 3, 2026, the existing map remains in place. Late legal reversals or extraordinary court intervention remain the primary scenarios that could alter this outcome.
